When Defining Sport Matter$

Scott sends me this article from the NY Times that covers attempts by The English Bridge Union to get bridge officially categorized as a sport so that their game/sport can qualify for government funding.

Who knew the stakes of defining an activity as game or sport could be so high (in the millions)?

It is fitting that this debate is taking place in England since, as I have argued here, the notion of sport as we understand it today is a concept born in nineteenth-century England.
