Are Video Games Sports?

Jeremy sends me this story about the similarities between high-level gamers and professional athletes.

I know a number of gamers actually hire coaches. And despite their terrible fitness level, they have great reflexes.

So... sport or not?

Sport requires physical activity (to me more like aerobic activity) and competition. Video Gaming meets only one of those requirements.

I don't think gaming is sport, but wouldn't limiting sport to aerobic activity exclude weightlifting? Shot-put? Hammer-throw? what about NASCAR? Billiards?

My son, who is as uncoordinated as I was at 9 years old, would say gaming is a sport. It tests his dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and his ability to accomplish specific goals.

And he can do it while eating chips!
